Reet Triefeldt learned to knit at the age of six or seven and designed and knit her first multicoloured sweater when she was 12. Her knitting skills have grown and expanded since that time.
During the last few years Reet has concentrated on lace knitting focusing on shawls and garments. Most of her lace designs are derived from the Estonian Haapsalu shawl. One of the distinct features of the Haapsalu shawl is the “nupp” (a mini bobble) which adds texture to an otherwise delicate and airy shawl. This basic structure allows marvelous variety and creative freedom without duplication.
Reet has used various other techniques in her work, particularly working with coloured yarns. Mosaic knitting is a particular favourite. At the present time she is exploring double knitting.
She is on the executive committee of the Estonian Ethnographic Society in Canada. This facilitates her exploration of historic textile design and techniques which inform her work.
