Lucy Slykerman

Better known as a handweaver and dyer, Lucy Slykerman added surface design/printing on fabric to her textile repertoire 8 year ago.

Her love of weaving started with the process of making cloth – the magic of organizing threads on a loom and then interlacing them to make beautiful things you could touch and feel. After 20 plus years of honing her weaving skills, Lucy started to explore the world of colour through dyeing.  In a painterly way, she dyes the threads with which she weaves before taking them to her loom. Lucy’s artistic journey in textiles continued with an introduction into the world of surface design. Now, through the means of stamping and silk screening with dye pastes, she creates designs on cloth without the constraints of the ‘x’ and ‘y’ axes of warp and weft. She has fallen in love with the process of taking a ‘canvas’ of white cloth and creating layers of images on that cloth.

Still very much a weaver, Lucy has added a printing table to her textile studio and divides her creative time between creating cloth through weaving and making marks on cloth by printing.
